EM Deny Registration

How can one deny registration of a particular SQL Server
through Enterprise Manager and still be able to open a
query analyzer and access the target database of that
particular server (read only)? My problem is some users
had a green light from above to have an Enterprise
Manager installed on their server but yet have very
little experience navigating it. I am afraid if they
registered this particular server and accidentally open a
table (all rows). I can not deny them access completely
since they need to have read access from the database.Hi,
You cant restrict EM alone. If the user have access then they will be able
to register in EM.

You can restict permissions to do any operations per database. Let me say if
the user has not permissions to operate with a database XXX ,so he will not
be able to get in vs EM.

EM and QA displays different format for a date field

Hi,
I have a datetime field with a value '1/1/02'. EM display it as 1/1/02 But
Query Analyzer displays it as 2002-01-01 00:00:00.000 (I used SELECT * FROM
Table1)
So in Query Analyzer, I can't tell the fomat of it. I just wonder if your
PC does the same.
Thanks.You have a problem under standing of what a data value is and how it is
stored. It is actually just stored as numeric value, denoting offsets from
some time in the reasonably distant past. Format is based on the user. QA
uses a standard value, mostly because when you are using QA the goal is
usually to see ALL of the data.
Enterprise manager is probably using your system settings. When you
actually use the data, you can format it as you wish.

Different clients display things differently, with the possible
excepting of strings made up of printable ASCII with codes
from 32 to 127.
If you want the datetime displayed in a particular format, I'd
suggest you select CONVERT(varchar(40),yourDatetimeColumn,X
XXX),
where XXXX is the appropriate SQL Server format code (see the
Books Online article CAST and CONVERT).
If you do this, you won't be able to "edit" the datetime values
in Enterprise Manager, but that's not a good idea anyway. Better
to make changes programmatically with UPDATE or INSERT
statements.

Effective Permissions for QA and EM

I am looking for information regarding permissions needed to be able to run
1) the Query Analyzer and 2) Enterprise Manager.
Since we are required to revoke all access from the public role, all
inherited permissions needed to run the above applications are gone. I
can't seem to find any documentation on which objects are needed in order to
make those functional for a particular role.

To open a database in Enterprise manager or Query Analyzer you should be
user in that partcular database. Then to access the object
you should have minimum select rights on table and exec rights on procedures

I understand you have to be a user in that database, but since I revoke all
access from public, simply adding a user to a database has a net result of
nothing. I need to know /specifically/ which objects the user would need
explicit access to.
Examples include:
- system tables in master
- sprocs and extended sprocs in master
- views in master (syslogins? sysconstraints?)
- system tables in user databases they need access to
etc...
I can take care of all the user objects - I need to know about system
objects. I can't just assign people to the db_owner database role either -
I need to grant them just enough privileges to use those two applications,
but no more.

Editing table data in Query Analyzer

Hi All !
I open a table in Query Analyzer by right clicking on it and
selecting 'Open' and when the data is displayed in the view pane I
would like to be able to edit it. It seems however that tables marked
as read only (as shown on the top bar e.g. SQL Query Analyzer - [Open
Table ServerName.DBName.dbo.TableName(read-only)] ) can not be edited
whereas the one that do not have that attribute infront of the name I
can edit. Is there a way I can change the read only attribute of a
table so that I can edit data directly in the view pane?
Please let me know if there is !

I suspect your table has no primary key (which it normally should have) or
unique index. If there's no way to identify each row in the table then you
can't edit it because there's no way to know which row you're changing. You
can still use an UPDATE statement to modify the table data of course.
