embedding RS into a java (j2ee) application

Can anyone point me to some useful information on embedding reports into a
java (J2EE) application?
StephanieNot specifically but I can tell you your options. There are three ways to
integrate reports into an application: roll your own with web services, use
URL integration, use the reportviewer control that comes with VS 2005. Of
these you can use the first two. The control is a 2.0 framework control and
is of no use to you.
The easiest is URL access(search BOL for URL).
Report Manager itself uses web services (Report Manager is really just a
portal that ships with RS. It does nothing that you can't do yourself with
published web services)

(&rc:Toolbar=false). Is there a way to hide sections above the toolbar?
Basically, I want the user to only see the Toolbar and below within the app.
Perhaps the application can manage the Back button functionality?
Also, another quick question: Can you hide the report header and footer with
this sort of option or would you have to add hidden parameters to do that?
Some reports are used within the app and outside the app. When inside the
app, I do not want the report header and footer to show. I'm thinking I have
to add yet another hidden parameter.

toolbar.

Embedding reports in Winform App...

I am looking for options for rendering RDLs in a .Net 1.1 Windows Forms
application using SQL Server 2K.
Thanks everyone.Use fyiReporting component (http://www.fyireporting.com). Is open source and
read RDL files with Windows Forms Viewer component.

open source) components that actually use the infrastructure of SQL Server
Reporting Services (i.e. ReportServer web service and it's corresponding
security) rather than just simply being able to load an RDL file and view it
as the FYIReporting stuff does.
(I know .Net 2.0 and Yukon will support this but we do not have that as an
option)
Thanks all.

display that (pdf, excel, html, etc). Or you can use URL integration. Put a
IE browser control and set its URL appropriately. With .Net 2.0 where will
be a winform control which will make all of this extremely easy.

Embedding reporting services as a standalone product

Hi,
In the application that I am working on, we currently use Crystal Reports as
the embedded reporting engine. I am trying to evaluate if we should move
over to Microsoft Reporting Services. However, one thing confuses me. It
seems Microsoft Reporting Services will work only as a server under IIS.
This will not work for our customers. I am wondering if Reporting Services
has any embedded component much like Crystal Reports that we could use.
Thank you in advance for your help.
SunnyVersion 2 will have a web form and a winform that does not require the
server (works with the server if there but does not require it).

Embedding plug-ins in Reports

Hi,
I am trying to figure out the way to embed a plug-in (Chime for Windows)
into my report, so that I can display a certain object from a database, that
is stored there as a string. This Chime plug-in would read the input string
and convert it to video display.
This embedding is easily done in simple HTML:
<embed type='chemical/x-mdl-molfile' display2d=true width=200 height=200
hlabels2d='terminalhetero' structure= [encrypted string from the database
follows]>
I am wondering is there a way to do such embedding straight into my report
by using the report designer features or by modifying an RDL file for my
report?
Thank you.
Anton Bagayev,

That would be an exiting idea.
Thanks in advance.

Embedding literals in RDL that will come through in HTML

I am trying to create some reports that when rendered in HTML are supposed to have some interactivity built into them. I understand that there aren't any facilities in RDL itself that would help facilitate this process for me, but is there any way to embed some literal strings that will come through in the HTML?

The items I'm trying to finesse through are <script> blocks, checkboxes, and <object> tags. When I use the designer to put these items into textboxes, they get encoded with the HTML values (&gt; instead of >, etc...) so that the code is displayed instead of interpreted.

I thought maybe there would be a VB function that I can wrap around the HTML to prevent it from being encoded so that when the report is displayed on the screen that the interactive elements are there.

Any ideas?

I think this relates to formatting text within a cell, which does not appear to be possible. Perhaps some sort of javascript which will change the innerHTML of the report document?|||

Thanks for the response.

I think that I have solved the problem for my situation. Here's what I've discovered so far:

If you use a textbox control, you can set the value of it to an HTML snippet (I'm using an object tag with some param tags as well as checkbox controls). When the report is rendered to HTML, the HTML that was embedded into the report shows as source on the page. I've taken that HTML, saved it off to a file and modified it using some .NET classes. Specifically the HTTPUtility.HtmlDecode function. That function will take the HTML file and undo all of the encoding that Reporting Services has done to your HTML. I also did a small test where I inserted a "&lt;" character somewhere else in the HTML document to simulate something that may actually occur. When I decoded the file that time, all of the encoded HTML snippets were properly decoded, and the less than sign was left alone.

If someone were rendering using the Web Service APIs for Reporting Services, this would work because you are given the stream back. In the case of using a WebForms ReportViewer though, it might be more difficult.

I hope this helps anyone who has a similar problem.

|||Sounds interesting, can you post the code or a snippet of it?

embedding html

Just curious if anyone has any hints to embed HTML directly into a report. I
am doing reports that will be exported to excel when run as a subscription
and using an index (which jump to bookmarks) and page breaks to get each
report onto new tabs.
My current report, done with a different tool, has 2 "Help" tabs that are
formatted text that describe how to interpret the report. I need to
replicate this in reporting services. One problem is that textbox in RS is
way too limited in its functionality.
I could probably link out to an HTML page, but I want the new help tabs to
export to excel along with the report.
Any ideas?I can't think of a way until HTML is supported in text boxes.

Embedding Dundas Chart Pro Charts in RS

This there a way to integrate the full version of Dundas Chart Pro in RS reports by using the extensibility API?
Including a URL accessed image of a Dundas Chart doesn't cut it if the rendering is to be done by PDF - my experence is showing that the image will be heavily pixelated.
TIA
JeffNot yet. I expect the Yukon version to support extensibility.

Embedded Reports

hi,
do i have access to subreports '
for example: how many rows were created?
a have a tablerow with a sub report.
i want to set the visibility to hidden, if no rows were created in the
subreport...
regards
PatrickThe parent report doesn't have access to properties of the subreport.
You may want to consider setting the NoRows property on the subreport
control in the master report.
Or make the subreport control in the master report very small and then have
the subreport hide its own contents if there are no rows of data.
As a last resort, you could put a query in the master report that returns a
count of the rows of the subreport (or if you're calling the subreport
inside of a list, you would include the count as a column in your master
query) and then base the visibility on that count.

Embedded Fonts anytime soon?

Hi,
Does anyone know if Microsoft is planning to support embedded fonts in the
near future?
We have been using Crystal Reports for our reporting. We are trying out
Reporting Services for the new reports and we like what we see so far, but
there is one major issue: embedded fonts.
We have lots of customers lined up that require the use of OCRA and Barcode
fonts in their pdf documents. Installing these fonts on each client machine
is not an option.
If there is no such plan to include embedded fonts in the near future, we
may have to go back to Crystal Reports.
Thanks,
George
Thanks,
GeorgeGeorge,
From what I understand, the font must be installed on the report server
itself and of course, you must have had it installed on your designer
workstation when you designed the report. Have you done a test?
As an example, we use the font Ariel Unicode to properly display our
diatrics properly - but the legal way to have this font is to install
Microsoft Word - so we now have our customers install MS Word 2003 on the
web server to get this font.

I do have the font installed on the reportserver and on the designer
workstation. My reports are exported to PDF. When I view the reports on my
machine I get to see the Barcode and OCRA fonts. When I view the report on a
machine which doesnt have these fonts , the fonts just don't show up. The
issue has to do with embedding fonts with the pdf, in which case the fonts
will show up on all client machines. I know that currently RS doesnt support
embedding fonts. There were some rumours that they might consider something
in a future release. Would just like to hear from them regarding a more
specific timeframe.
If it's like in a couple of months, we could wait, else we have to do this
in crystal.
Thanks|||George - what would happen if you save that PDF file on your local machine,
then go over to the machine that doesn't have this font and open the PDF
document - does it render the PDF correctly?

No lucj with that either. The pdf shows correctly only on the machine that
has the font installed.

e-mailing reports and refreshing reports automatically

Hello:
I know that you can e-mail SQL Reporting Services reports. But, can the
reports be configured to refresh their data automatically and be e-mailed to
users automatically with the refreshed data?
Or, would someone have to go into SQL Reporting Services, manually refresh,
and manually e-mail the reports?
Thanks!
childofthe1980sOrdinarily, this is automatic. Unless you tell a report to pull from a
stored snapshot, it is running your queries and re-pulling the data
automatically each time the report is run...
Maybe I misunderstand your question?

automatically behind the scenes without user intervention.
Thanks!

"intervene". Unless you *told* the report to hold a static snapshot, it
*always* pulls the data live, at each subscription run instance.

Emailing Reports

Hi everyone I have a database that I am creating for another department. He emails applications to potential vendors. And I was wanting sql to do this for him. I was reading about xtended procedures XP_Sendmail, but this is the first time I have created an extended stored procedure. I need for it to email an attachment (the report)Read BOL on xp_sendmail. It's all there.sql

Emailing from the SQL 2000 server

I have a few maintenance routines created and SQL 2000 has options to email
the reports. Do I need to have Outlook installed on the SQL server to do
these emails.
Also, since outlook uses user profiles I assume that I must log onto the SQL
server as the account used to run SQL server to configure Outlook. If that
is the case, how can I have other administrators configure notifications
without everyone using the same account to configure the SQL server? I
loose accountability when everyone uses the same account.Hello jordan
Yes, thats true, you must install Outlook in the SQL Servers Windows
profile.
But
I use SQLDev.NET:s xp_smtp_sendmail. Its working very good.
http://www.sqldev.net
Then you can create a SQL Alert to use for DBMaint.
http://www.dbmaint.com/SmtpAlerter.asp
Have just tried the Alert, but i dont have it in production

Outlook must be installed and a profile configured ONLY under the login
that the SQL services run under, not under each administrator's login.
You'll then configure the SQL Mail component to use that profile. Your
admins will continue to configure notifications as they do now.

emailing excel and pdf not working

I can email Web Archive reports successfully. However, I cannot send reports
in Excel or PDF.
I have Acrobat Pro 6 installed.
I DO NOT have Excel 2003 installed, but I can if necessary.
Did I missing a configuration step or something?Afte a few weeks of troubleshooting I got it to work. It was totally
unrelated to RS.

Emailed Reports in Blackberry

Does anyone have a way to get reports that are emailed out via the
Subscriptions service as a WebArchive to appear normally in a
Blackberry? Each element in a row in a table gets put into a new line.
It looks fine in any normal email interface, but not in a Blackberry.
e.g.
Row1Col1 Row1Col2
Row2Col1 Row2Col2
will display in the Blackberry as
Row1Col1
Row1Col2
Row2Col1
Row2Col2
There seems to be a <p> tag in the raw html in each table item.
Any help is much appreciated. On Oct 3, 4:29 pm, TGav <cara...@.gmail.com> wrote:

You might try changing the report format to accommodate the
Blackberry. Also, you might want to look into a different export
option and/or a different type solution that possibly is geared toward
Visual Studio on Mobile Devices. Sorry that I could not be of greater
assistance.

Email Subscriptions Problem

Hi,
We recently have troubleshoots with email subscriptions. Some reports are
correctly sent, others aren't... There are no error messages in the "state"
column of all those subscriptions, "mail sent to.." is displayed.
Everything seems correct in the log files, RS tells us that all messages
have been sent correctly. The only "strange" info line is this one before
report execution for subscription:
ReportingServicesService!session!d9c!01/05/2006-10:58:03:: i INFO:
LoadSnapshot: Item with session: oeu4yqy5w1pcei45oo3xx2jd, reportPath:
/<report_path>, userName: <domain>\<user> not found in the database.
Another user in the newsgroup is facing the same problem:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/dgbrowser/en-us/default.mspx?lang=en&cr=US&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.sqlserver.reportingsvcs&p=1&tid=e4cb35ba-f73e-412a-928e-0db4b093072d&mid=e4cb35ba-f73e-412a-928e-0db4b093072d
For information, we are using Reporting Services SP2 on Windows Server 2K3.
Thanks in advance.
Grégory. You can try having the emails dropped to a folder instead. If all the
emails are getting correctly dropped then your SMTP server is having an
issue passing them on and you should look into that.
To get the emails to drop to a folder, set the SMTPPickupDirectory element
in the RSReportServer.config file to a folder location, then set the
SendUsing element to 1. All emails will then be placed in that folder. If
some are not being placed then the log files should state why they are not.

send the emails. We use the CDO objects to generate and send the emails.
If it reports no errors then from RS everything is working. The most
reliable way to set up RS to forward emails is to have it drop the .eml
files to the local SMTP pickup directory and have this relay the emails to
your SMTP server. Using the local smtp server gives you much better retry
logic as well as more configuration options.

This time I took off SMTP pickup directory and also took off SendUse=1. It
works fine. I guess that's because I restart the ReportServer service.
Yesterday, I also missed some email, I tried to delete the subscription and
create a new one, if fixed as well.
So my suggestion to Greg is, to restart service and recreate the subscription.
So far they are working fine. Hope not missing again...

Well... After restarting ReportServer service, everything worked well during
2 days... and this morning the problem was back again!
I've tried to change SMTP Pickup Directory and SendUsing options, but since
we have to restart service for changes to take effect , it's always working
after that and eml files are created in the directory.
Mails are correctly sent too when i restart ReportServer, so the best way
would be to test the first option during some days.. But since the server is
our production server, it's impossible.
Is there a way to have messages dropped in the directory and sent via SMTP
in the meantime.
Thanx in advance.
Grégory.

must have the local SMTP server installed. You then configure the SMTP
server to relay the messages, then configure RS to drop the eml files to the
SMTP server's pickup directory.

I've got some news!
I've made some test with the AntiVirus protection on the server... and guess
what... when I stop the antivirus, subscriptions on a particular problematic
report are working ... when I start it again, mails aren't sent.
We are actually using Symantec AntiVirus 10, this version has been installed
mid-december. Is there any incomatibility beetween this progam and Reporting
Services ?
Once again Daniel, thanks for your support.

being dropped to a folder or sent directly to the SMTP server? Does it
repro if you leave the antivirus on and don't scan the RSTempFiles
directory? Are you excluding the ASP.Net temporary files directory?

When you say "not sent", what does log say about it? Is it still not error,
but the receipt not receive the email? I was using outlook to receive email,
email went to "Junk E-Mail" box, I though I did not receive them at all.
(Daniel, sorry about my last message, in fact it was working fine.). If you
are include the report as "Web Archive" and you turn on your outlook "Junk
Email" setting, the email will go to "Junk E-Mail". But with Excel format, it
will go to your inbox, or rountie by some rules you define.
I guess, with "Web Archive" the email message will contain some script
outlook "thinks" un-save to it. So I guess, when you run AntiVirus, for
protection, the email either filter to Junk mail box by outlook, or filter by
the mail server, thought?

included in the Corporate Edition of Symanted Antivirus. This may be
what's causing your error. If you right click on the email message in
Outlook -> Options and see something similar in the Internet headers,
it a clear indication that Symantec Mail Security could be to blame.
Microsoft Mail Internet Headers Version 2.0
X-SMSMSE-SCL: 2
I resolved the issue by adding my domain to sender whitelist within the
Symantec Antivirus web configuration tool under Real Time Blacklists
and Whitelists.
Larry|||Tony,
The log says that message has been sent. But I receive nothing, I checked
"Junk Mails" and nothing was there too.
The fact is that the Antivirus is on the RS Server, not on the client
desktop. So, I think that I'm encountering a Server problem more than a
client one.
Best Regards,
Grégory.

It's when email are sent directly to the SMTP Server.
For the moment, we have disabled Symantec auto-protect on the server. We
will investigate further in a couple of days. I'll let you know which
directories have to be excluded from the scan.

"Internet E-mail Auto-protect".
Now everything works fine.
